Looking for an Opal alternative? Lampi doesn’t grade you.
Opal is a very complete app blocker: sessions, schedules and a focus score. Lampi takes another path: a pet that keeps you company all day, shines when you put your phone down and doesn’t punish you if you overdo it. Here are both, pros and cons.
Lampi and Opal at a glance
| Lampi | Opal | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A light pet that keeps you company all day and shines brighter the less you use your thief apps. | An app and website blocker with focus sessions, reports and a score (Focus Score). |
| How it works | You pick the apps and a gentle daily limit. No sessions to start: Lampi follows along on her own with Apple’s Screen Time. | You schedule sessions and time blocks (work, sleep, routines) and Opal blocks the chosen apps while they last. It uses Apple’s Screen Time. |
| If you slip | She takes a nap. If you open an app past your limit, she asks if you really want to go in; you can stop, breathe with her for 20 seconds or ask for 5 more minutes. She never gets sick or dies, and tomorrow starts fresh. | Depends on the mode: you can take breaks, and its strictest mode, Deep Focus, can’t be bypassed or cancelled. |
| What’s free | The important stuff: Lampi and her shield, the daily limit, expeditions and postcards, breathing with her and night mode. | According to the team on the listing: one recurring scheduled session, unlimited instant sessions and unlimited rules. |
| Paid | Lampi Plus, optional: $6.99/month or $49.99/year, with a 7-day trial on the yearly plan. | Paid plans from $4.99/week to $99.99/year (the listing shows several weekly, monthly and yearly plans). |

What Opal does better
- Stronger blocking. Sessions, calendar schedules, website blocking and a mode you can’t cancel. If you want a wall, Opal is more of a wall.
- Data. Reports, a Focus Score and a daily leaderboard to compare yourself with others. Lots of people find that motivating.
- Track record. It’s been on the App Store for years (4.7 stars from about 90,000 ratings in the US) and it’s already on Android.
What Lampi does differently
- All day, no sessions. Nothing to remember to start: set your limit once and Lampi keeps you company.
- No grades. Lampi doesn’t score you or compare you with anyone. She just shines more or less depending on your day.
- No punishment. If you overdo it, she takes a nap and asks if you really want to go in. There’s always a way out with “5 more min” (or a strict shield, if you choose it).
- The important stuff is free. The limit, the shield and the expeditions aren’t paid. Plus is $49.99 a year, compared with $99.99 for Opal’s yearly plan.
Which one is right for you?
If you want to block apps firmly, on a schedule and with stats, Opal does that job very well. If walls only last you two days and you’d rather put your phone down for someone you like, give Lampi a try.
